Kasba councilor attack: Fake scooter plates uncovered as police faces criticism from TMC leaders

Detectives investigating the attack on Kasba councilor Sushanta Ghosh have successfully identified the scooter used in the assault through CCTV footage. Upon closer inspection, however, it was discovered that the number plate of the scooter did not belong to the vehicle it was attached to. The number plate was swapped by the attacker, Gulzar, who had purchased the scooter from an individual weeks before the attack. Investigators have already identified the seller and are now questioning him to determine when the scooter was sold, the price at which it was sold, and whether the number plate was altered before or after the transaction.

Gulzar’s motive for buying the scooter appears to be linked to the attack on the councilor. Investigators believe that he specifically purchased an old scooter for the crime and altered the original number plate to avoid detection. The number plate that was used on the scooter during the attack was found to belong to a different vehicle. The investigation team is examining whether Gulzar carried out the alteration before or after the scooter was sold to him.

In addition to the details about the scooter, the investigation has revealed the criminal background of the two individuals involved in the attack. Both individuals have ties to the notorious Pappu Chowdhury gang from Bihar, which is known for its violent activities. Investigators have been able to gather information from Bihar police regarding the suspects' past criminal records, which include various offenses. This information is proving crucial in linking the attackers to the assault on Ghosh and providing further context to the investigation.

The attack on Sushanta Ghosh has raised significant concerns about security in Kolkata, leading to criticism of the police and the administration. Kolkata’s Mayor Firhad Hakim has openly criticized the police for their handling of the situation, urging them to take more proactive measures in responding to crimes. He emphasized that the police need to be more vigilant and act decisively in such incidents. “Police, where are you?” Hakim questioned, expressing frustration with the apparent lack of action.

Sougata Roy, Member of Parliament for Dumdum, also voiced his concerns about the city's security infrastructure. He pointed out the issue of firearms entering the city, questioning how pistols are making their way into Kolkata. Roy criticized the police for failing to catch the culprits, despite their known criminal backgrounds. He also raised concerns about a security breach in a separate case, where a civic volunteer managed to gain access to the fourth floor of a building unnoticed.
